Born in Germany, came to the United States in 1857 and became a naturalized citizen in 1859. He was a strong republican and enlisted on 10-30-1859 in the Union Army as a private. He served in the 193rd regiment of New York and for brave and meritorious conduct was first promoted to Sergeant Major and later to Second Lieutenant. He met his wife, Francis while she was visiting in Pennsylvania. He married her while on furlough from his duty station at Harpers Ferry, VA. They were married in Philadelphia. During the war (the War Between the States or Civil War), he was wounded twice. The first time a bullet passed through his left shoulder. The second time, while aiming his rifle, a bullet struck his wrist about 4 inches from his hand and spiraled seven times around the bones of his forearm. This bullet had to be removed from the muscle of his left arm. His arm was never fully functional after this wound. After the war, Isaac and his wife moved to Roanoke, IN. About 1876 they moved to Dayton, OH. In Dayton, Isaac started the first butcher shop on Broadway. In 1884, he started the first book and paper store handling wallpaper and wrapping paper. He traveled in sales for R.A. Rogers and Co., a wholesale book, paper and notion house on E. 3rd between Jefferson and St. Clair Streets. He was in the book business from 1884 to 1888. He then traveled for Shaffer, Benson Tablet Co., which merged, into White Paper Co. and then the Aetna Paper Mills. He died at age 57 probably from heart problems in Dayton, OH. He was described as 5' 5 1/2”, light complexion with gray eyes and brown hair. Appointed Sergeant Major 193rd New York Volunteer Infantry on May 2, 1865, T.B. Wasson commanding officer, I.B. Van Petten Col. June 6, 1865 appointed Second Lieutenant, 193rd New York Infantry, Ruben E. Fenton, Governor of New York and commander in chief given at Albany N.Y. July 31, 1865. Discharged January 18, 1866 at Harpers Ferry by reason of G.O. #94 signed E.N. Ackins 1st Lieutenant 8th U.S. Infantry and John Jones, Captain, Company A, 193 New York Volunteer Infantry. Pension granted June 14, 1893 certificate number 504066 to Francis Meyers $8 per month. April 19, 1908; $12 per month. September 8, 1916; $20 per month. October 6, 1917; $25 per month.
